The Quotable Frank Rich

“Now that explicit anti-gay animus is an albatross, those who oppose gay civil rights are driven to invent ever loopier rationales for denying those rights, whether in the military or in marriage.”

The late Billy Preston – Nothing from nothing 1975 (video: fritz5174 at YouTube)

I’ve been telling friends, and anyone crazy enough to listen to an angry gay blogger like me, what the gays need is a new anthem.

I think I found it.

According to Newsweek, the gays can again expect zip, nada, zero, null from the Obama Administration. In 2009, the gays were rewarded for their loyalty, cash and votes with a few trinkets, a bauble or two, a couple of pretty speeches and cocktails for the A-gays. In 2010, expect a lump of coal in your stocking as the Democrats will be scrambling to retain their numeric advantage, which hasn’t actually proven to be all that advantageous after all.

Moreover, if socially divisive policies have the potential to compromise his legislative agenda, Obama has proven that he simply won’t pursue them. Expect this tension to become more acute as the 2010 elections loom—and for gay rights to be shunted aside again. The last thing this pragmatist president will do is hand election-year ammunition to an already energized conservative base that’s venomously opposed to gay marriage.

“Socially divisive policies,” by the way, is another way of saying: basic rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender American citizens.

Sing along with Billy Preston with this modest adjustment to his lyrics:

Nothin’ from nothin’ leaves nothin’
And I’m not stuffin’
Believe you me
Don’t you remember I told ya
I’m a soldier in the war for equality, yeah
Yes, I am
