CA state anti-gay DUIed after gay bar visit

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

GOP senator and gay marriage opponent Roy Ashburn inducted into
the Hypocrite Hall of Fame (video: ChinoBlanco at YouTube)

Via Joe Jervis, of the popular Joe. My. God. blog) we learn bright and early this morning that another holier-than-thou, antigay elected Republican has been busted on the down low, as it were. California state Senator Roy Ashburn (R-Bakersfield) early Wednesday morning was arrested for driving under the influence after leaving a gay bar in Sacramento, and the Senator was not alone:

Anti-gay GOP California state Sen. Roy Ashburn was arrested for DUI yesterday after leaving Faces, a popular Sacramento gay bar, with an unidentified male passenger. Ashburn has been a loud opponent of LGBT rights and has organized and hosted anti-gay marriage rallies for the Traditional Values Coalition. He also has a 100% rating from the anti-gay Capitol Resource Family Impact group for voting against every LGBT rights bill during his tenure.

There’s much more at the link, including all the juicy details about this scumbag’s anti-gay voting record.

CBS13 News has this background and Ashburn’s statement:

Ashburn, a father of four, is a Republican Senator representing parts of Kern, Tulare and San Bernardino Counties with a history of opposing gay rights.

Ashburn issued a statement on the arrest Wednesday afternoon:

“I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment. I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did. I am also truly sorry for the impact this incident will have on those who support and trust me – my family, my constituents, my friends, and my colleagues in the Senate.”

Yeah. Right.

Bill Moyers and the Prop 8 trial

Bill Moyers Journal (video: MarriageTrial at YouTube)

Attorneys Ted Olson and David Boies discussed the ongoing Prop 8 trial, Perry v Schwarzenegger, with PBS’s Bill Moyers. Embedding the video is not allowed, but you can kick back and watch it Chez Moyers.

Moyers sets the stage:

It’s true. Ted Olson, a conservative, and David Boies, a liberal, are in the middle of a case that, win or lose, they expect, will wind up at the Supreme Court, just like Bush v. Gore. The former adversaries have united in support of core American values: diversity, equality and tolerance. They’re key players in one of the most important civil rights trials of the last decade. It’s a pivotal legal action that could change our society, but which has escaped the attention of much of the country.

Oh! And, as a bonus, PBS viewers get to relive the paranoid insanity of the National Organization for Marriage’s craptastic Gathering Storm commerical — the much-parodied ad issued right before NOM’s Maggie Gallagher and Brian Brown got their hooks into christianist porn princess Carrie Prejean.

APA pulls out of Manchester meeting

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

On the heels of yesterday’s news that staunch advocate for traditional marriage and contributor to California’s Proposition 8 Papa Doug Manchester has been granted a legal separation from his wife Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Manchester, who filed for divorce in August, we learn the American Psychological Association has cancelled its August meeting at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego.

The hotel has been under boycott, now in its second year, launched by an alliance of labor and LGBT groups, including Californians Against Hate, Equality California, Courage Campaign, Unite Here and others. Fred Karger, founder of Californians Against Hate, has estimated that the Manchester-owned property is losing a million dollars per month in bookings — a charge Manchester’s representatives limply deny.

Manchester contributed $125,000.00 in seed money to bankroll signature gathering for Prop 8, the ballot proposition that would — with massive infusions of Mormon cash and backing from a number of fanatical anti-gay religious organizations and cults — eliminate the existing right of California gay and lesbian couples to marry.

Here’s the press release from the APA:

APA Council Votes to Move Its August Meeting Out of the Manchester Hyatt Hotel

(Washington, DC) — The Council of Representatives, the major legislative body of the American Psychological Association, will not meet at the Manchester Hyatt Hotel during the Association’s August 2010 Convention. In response to a donation to the Proposition 8 campaign by the owner of the Manchester Hyatt, Doug Manchester, a number of APA Divisions and members voiced concerns about APA’s use of the hotel during its annual meeting.

“Today’s decision allows Council to make an important statement that it stands in solidarity with the LGBT community and its allies in protest of Mr. Manchester’s political views. Members of our Council will now not be faced with having to choose between their responsibilities as members of Council and their wish to express their opposition to Mr. Manchester’s action by not entering his hotel,” said APA President Dr. Carol Goodheart.

APA is not calling for a general boycott of the Hyatt hotel but will make every effort to provide choices to members or groups who do not want to use the Hyatt hotel. Other lodging and meeting space will be available.

“It is important that we be respectful of the decisions of individuals; those who choose to stay at the Hyatt and those who do not,” said Goodheart.

In addition, APA plans to use the meeting to highlight the Association’s policy statement in support of same-sex marriage and the science that supports that position.

MSM notes Obama’s vacillation on marriage

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

In an article in yesterday’s San Francisco Chronicle called Obama elusive on about-face on same-sex marriage, Bob Egelko has a clue for those who attempt to muster support for their relentless campaign to prevent equality for LGBT citizens by claiming they hold the same position on marriage as the President of the United States:

President Obama says he opposes same-sex marriage for religious reasons. Fourteen years ago, however, while a churchgoing Christian and a state legislative candidate, he endorsed the right of gays and lesbians to marry.

Sponsors of Proposition 8, California’s ban on same-sex marriage, cited Obama’s current position in their 2008 campaign and have quoted him in their defense of the measure during a federal court trial in San Francisco. Gay rights groups, noting that Obama actually opposed Prop. 8, have urged him to take a stance on the lawsuit, without success.

What has received much less attention is Obama’s unexplained reversal of the position he once held backing same-sex marriage – the position still held by the church he attended for most of his adult life.

Obama was running for the Illinois state Senate in Chicago in February 1996 when he answered a questionnaire from a gay-oriented newspaper, Outlines, on gay rights issues. One of his answers was, “I favor legalizing same-sex marriage, and would fight efforts to prohibit such marriages.

(emphasis: mine)

The opponents of marriage equality are either deviously selective in what they choose to report about the President’s position or just plain ignorant. In 2008, candidate Obama took a position Geoff Kors, the Executive Director of Equality California, labeled “pure politics.”

“When he was running for office in Chicago and wanted strong support from the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community, he made it clear he supported full equality,” Kors said. “Since he has continued to seek higher office, he has changed his position for the worse.

The President’s position seems to be evolving once again. In a speech last October to the Human Rights Campaign, Obama said:

You will see a time in which we as a nation finally recognize relationships between two men or two women as just as real and admirable as relationships between a man and a woman. You will see a nation that’s valuing and cherishing these families as we build a more perfect union — a union in which gay Americans are an important part. I am committed to these goals. And my administration will continue fighting to achieve them.

If right-wing, anti-gay zealots want to continue to claim they share the same position on marriage equality as the President, they’ll have some evolving to do themselves. And, that’s a good thing.

Responding to an article by veteran activist David Mixner, a number of equality activists called Egelko’s Chronicle piece “old news.” It might be just that for those of us in the trenches, but it’s refreshing and positive to see the mainstream media reporting the whole truth, context and history behind the President’s on again, off again support for equal rights, vis-à-vis marriage, for LGBT couples.
