To be successful we cannot just organize in areas that are supportive. We must also reach out to communities that have not traditionally been our allies in this fight to bridge the gap in understanding. We will have conversations with people, both at their doors and in busy public spaces to raise consciousness about the issue as well as funds for the cause. We will keep our community energized and engaged as activists, fighting to win back our fundamental right to marry.

Out & About San Diego

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Gone but not forgotten (photo: mine)

Hello February 2010! And a bodaciously grand Ground Hog Day to each and every one of you. Here’s a collection of events coming up in and around the San Diego community.

Tuesday, 2 February:

at The Center

Join us on Tuesday, February 2 at 7 pm at The Center for Coffee & Conversation with Cool Women, a monthly event featuring Tryce Czyczynska interviewing notable women from the community. In honor of Valentine’s Day, we are featuring romantic couple and creative partners Jessica Culpepper and Mary Buckheit. Jessica is the Program Manager at the Hillcrest Youth Center and Mary is a full-time writer for ESPN.com; together they host webisodes on FlawLes TV. Join us for coffee, dessert and a dynamic conversation about love, sports and activism. This event is FREE and will take place in The Center’s library. Both men and women are welcome. For more information, contact Abby Schwartz at (619) 692-2077, ext. 212, or women @ thecentersd.org.

Wednesday, 3 February:

Thursday, 4 February:

Protest against Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Bill

Join the San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality on February 4th for a protest action to spread the word about the Anti-Homosexuality Bill that has been introduced in Uganda. We will meet around 4:50 pm to bullhorn and wave signs and let the people know about this horrible legislation. This event is also running in conjunction with Equality Across America’s protest of the “Family’s” ( a U.S.-led right wing group with more than 10,000 cells worldwide) National Prayer Breakfast.

The infamous C Street House is the DC residence of far right U.S. politicians who have helped author or ardently support legislative efforts to restrict the civil rights of LGBTQ people and other minorities in America and throughout the world. For example, U.S. Senator John Ensign (R-NV), Family member and C Street resident, has argued for legislation to ban states from recognizing same-sex marriage. And U.S. Representative Bart Stupak (D-MI), another Family member and C Street resident, proposed an amendment to the House’s health care bill that is nothing more than a disgusting attempt to roll back abortion rights.

Ugandan Family members and anti-gay extremists are crafting that country’s dangerous “Anti-Homosexuality Bill” promising ruthless punishments such as the death penalty or life in prison for LGBTQ and HIV-positive people. The Ugandan government has long misspent and wasted millions of dollars of U.S. funding intended for HIV/AIDS prevention and wellness services. The new bill’s chief authors are Family members James Nsaba Buturo, Uganda’s Minister of Ethics and Integrity, and Member of Parliament David Bahati, both of whom have proceeded with the encouragement of Ugandan President and Family member Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

Time: 5:00pm – 5:45pm
Location: 6th and University
City: San Diego

Statewide Event to Repeal Prop 8!

Via Restore Equality 2010:

Are you one of 1,000?

On Saturday, February 6th, 2010 people from across the state will come together in unison to take action in repealing Proposition 8 and restoring marriage equality in California. This will be the biggest statewide event planned to gather 100,000+ signatures to repeal Proposition 8 in a single day! It’s a hefty challenge, but it’s one that we are ready to take on. If we have 1,000 volunteers and they each collect 100 signatures, we’ve met our goal. This is your chance to prove that you’re serious about equality. Every day that goes by is another day that we allow discrimination to be written into the constitution. It doesn’t matter what your sexual orientation is. It doesn’t matter what your political party affiliation is. Race doesn’t matter, and neither does gender, religion, age, etc. This is a human issue. It’s an equality issue, and equality knows no bounds.

If you haven’t been able to volunteer in the past, it’s OK. If you’re an extremely busy person and don’t have much time, that’s OK too. All we ask is that you volunteer a few hours on February 6th to help show the people in California that we are serious about equality. It’s just a few hours and it’s easy. Join us on Saturday, February 6th and bring a friend. In fact, bring lots of friends and even your family members because this is about working TOGETHER for a greater cause. We are stronger when we work together.

Actual evidence of actual weather taking place in San Diego (photo: mine)

UPDATE (20 January 4:40pm): The San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality rally, originally scheduled for 20 January, has been rescheduled for Saturday, 30 January.

UPDATE (21 January 3:00pm): The Community Coalition Breakfast featuring Speaker-Elect John Pérez has been cancelled due to weather.

In other developments, actual weather led to actual power outages in formerly sunny, formerly conservative San Diego. And, here I thought that whole in and out like a lion thing wasn’t scheduled to take place until March! In any event, so to speak, here’s a calendar of what’s happening in the next few weeks in San Diego.

Reminder: If your organization has a non-commercial, public event of interest to local community or political activists, drop me an email with the particulars and (oh please, please, please) a link to a proper Facebook event page if at all possible.

More about the group: “We’re looking for intelligent, creative and fun people to join our community of New Atheists and Agnostics. Building a fun-loving, supportive community is the main purpose of this group, not discussion of atheist philosophy. This group will provide the benefits available to like-minded communities without the downsides, such as religious beliefs. We welcome atheists, agnostics, humanists, brights and other secular humans.”

Ring in the New Year Protest
Boycott Manchester

It’s been two years since Doug Manchester, owner of the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel in San Diego, contributed $125,000 to anti-LGBT rights campaigners — an early infusion of cash that paid for the signature-gathering drive that put Proposition 8 on the ballot.

Members and supporters of San Diego’s large LGBT community immediately called for a boycott of the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel and, on July 10 of 2008, a coalition led by the San Diego LGBT community and the labor movement announced a formal boycott of the property. Equality California, Courage Campaign, Californians Against Hate, UNITE HERE International Union, the San Diego County Labor Council and many other LGBT and progressive organizations have endorsed the boycott, joined picket lines and attended rallies at the hotel.

Over the past eighteen months, the boycott of the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel has become a remarkably successful statement for marriage equality and a powerful example of the coalition between the LGBT movement and the labor movement.

Two years after Doug Manchester’s contribution to Proposition 8, the boycott of the Manchester Grand Hyatt continues. Join us Saturday, January 9th at 2pm outside the Manchester Hyatt (1 Market Place, San Diego)

MEUSA-SD Canvass OUT-Reach for Equality!

Project OUT-Reach – is a campaign by Marriage Equality USA -San Diego where we are going into neighborhoods around San Diego County talking to voters, asking them how they feel about marriage equality, educating the community about what’s happening around the issue, and getting them involved in the next steps towards equality. Even by starting right now we still need to open 300,000 Californian hearts and minds by using earned media, demonstrations, public outreach and education.
