Thought police go after New York City Health Department anti-AIDS PSA

The New York City Health Department is running these ads directed at the men who have sex with men (MSM) (video: NYCHealth at YouTube)

The GLAAD thought police and GMHC (Gay Mens Health Collective) want the New York City Health Department’s new anti-AIDS public service announcement killed because it doesn’t pull any punches about what living with AIDS can be like. They insist on ads that reflect the same political correctness that has been killing mainly gay men in America for roughly 30 years now. Do you know what Einstein called doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result? Insanity.

Gay Groups Blast City-Sponsored HIV Ad ~ Metropolis
Two leading gay and lesbian advocacy groups want a new city-sponsored public service announcement about HIV pulled off the airwaves, calling the television commercial sensational and stigmatizing.
The graphic ad, which began airing last week, warns of the other health problems such as anal cancer and dementia that can be associated with HIV. The ad is part of a campaign by the city’s Department of Health & Mental Hygiene that aims to combat complacency about the disease among gay men.
A spokesman for the department said it had no intention of dropping the ad. “While some community groups may dislike the message, others have spoken out to support it,” the department said in a statement.

Here the cold hard truth:

“In a statement, the city’s Department of Health said, “Silence is no solution when the number of new HIV diagnoses among” men having sex with other men is up by more than 50% in eight years.”

Since the politically correct approach hasn’t stopped people from taking idiotic risks, maybe it’s time we tried the “scared straight” approach. I think what the NYC ad is doing is more like putting graphic photographs of lung disease on cigarette packs. Smokers (used to be one, inhaled like bloody hell) object to those photos, because they don’t want to be reminded that it could happen to them. Unfortunately, those pix on packs don’t stop all nicotine addicts, but a few is certainly better than none.
