The cluephone has apparently rung chez Bryan Fischer of the American Family Assocation: “Newt Gingrich is not morally qualified to be president of the United States.”
But? But? But? You say. Isn’t Newt Gingrich revered as a champion of morality among the holier-than-thou-canst-ever-hope-to-be culture warriors of the extreme political and religious right?
No, says Fischer: “Mr. Gingrich divorced two wives, the first of them while she was in the hospital recovering from surgery for uterine cancer. He apparently showed up at her bedside with a legal yellow pad outlining the details of the divorce settlement he had in mind.”

Gingrich is not morally qualified to be president of the United States
American Family AssociationAfter dumping his cancer-stricken first wife, he married a woman with whom he apparently had been having an affair while his wife was in the hospital.
That marriage lasted for about 18 years, and Mr. Gingrich dumped her by phone on Mother’s Day of 1999, eight months after finding out she had a neurological condition that could lead to multiple sclerosis.
He then married his current wife in 2000, after conducting an adulterous affair with her for six years. He was carrying on this affair while leading the effort to impeach president Bill Clinton for lying about doing the same thing.
Fischer notes that Gingrich has been miraculously reincarnated as a pillar of Christian faith and morality, and just in the nick of time for a 2012 campaign for the US Presidency. The thing is, Fischer ain’t exactly buying it:
Apparently Mr. Gingrich has come to a place of profound repentance and has renewed his faith in God. I have no reason to doubt the sincerity of his newfound faith.
But actions have consequences, and his pattern of infidelity is only made worse by the fact that he ditched ill wives to whom he pledged himself “in sickness and in health…til death do us part.”
As Harry Truman observed, if you can’t believe the promises a man makes to his bride, how can you trust any other word that comes out of his mouth?
Fischer is pointing out precisely the same things about Newt Gingrich that a lot of us lefties have been saying for some time now.
It’s curious then — although hypocrisy among the radical religious reich stopped surprising me long ago —that San Diego’s own paragon of traditional family values, Pastor Jim Garlow, is under the covers with Gingrich. Garlow serves as Chairman of Newt Gingrich’s Renewing American Leadership.
