A beautiful day in the neighborhood (cell phone photo: Mike Tidmus)

As regular readers might have gathered, I’ve switched the publication date of the Out & About San Diego calendar from Monday to Tuesday. The explanation would lull you into a deep state of hibernation, and there’s much to do in the upcoming weeks.

The holidays are upon us with Thanksgiving this Thursday. Meetings, media, music and more there’s so much to be thankful for. Here’s a taste of what’s coming up in the coming weeks here in anything but sleepy, formerly-conservative San Diego:

We want to invite LGBTQIQAA activists to become NEW members and NEW organizations to join us in coalition at this SAME membership meeting. Please join our membership meetings the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the Month. SAME meetings are open to the public. For more info visit SAME online.

Harvey Milk Vigil
The 31st anniversary of the assassination of Harvey Milk

On this day, 31 years ago, we lost a great hero and leader of our community to senseless violence. Let’s gather and remember together.

This will be a low-key event — bring some candles, and if you’d like to, something to say about Harvey (or Mayor George Moscone, who also was assassinated on this day 31 years ago).

Time: 6:30pm – 7:30pm
Location: The Center Parking Lot
Street: 3909 Centre Street
City: San Diego, CA

Saturday, 28 November:

MEUSA-SD Canvass OUT-Reach for Equality!

Project OUT-Reach – is a campaign by Marriage Equality USA -San Diego where we are going into neighborhoods around San Diego County talking to voters, asking them how they feel about marriage equality, educating the community about what’s happening around the issue, and getting them involved in the next steps towards equality. Even by starting right now we still need to open 300,000 Californian hearts and minds by using earned media, demonstrations, public outreach and education.

To be successful we cannot just organize in areas that are supportive. We must also reach out to communities that have not traditionally been our allies in this fight to bridge the gap in understanding. We will have conversations with people, both at their doors and in busy public spaces to raise consciousness about the issue as well as funds for the cause. We will keep our community energized and engaged as activists, fighting to win back our fundamental right to marry.

Time: 10:00am – 3:00pm
Location: Lips Restaurant
Street: 3036 El Cajon Blvd
City: San Diego, CA

The Grinch Who Stole Equality
He’s a mean one, Papa Doug …

papa_doug_150In February of 2008: Doug Manchester paid $125,000 to help ensure that Proposition 8 has enough signatures to qualify. His hotel, the Manchester Grand Hyatt in downtown, refuses to offer workers job security, even in these rough economic times. So, in July, San Diego LGBT Pride, Californians Against Hate, and Unite HERE local 30 called for a boycott of the Manchester Grand Hyatt.

It’s been 16 months, and we have held countless major protests and other actions at this hotel. Dozens of community organizations have joined us, including Courage Campaign, Equality California, San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality (SAME) and the San Diego LGBT Center. Our efforts have cost Doug Manchester more than $7 million dollars worth of business!

Join us now in wishing Doug Manchester a happy holiday — by equality themed caroling in front of his hotel. Marriage Equality USA has generously loaned us their Equality Carol songbook! We’ll be singing carols, and spreading equality cheer on Manchester’s front door. This Grinch who stole equality from Californians needs to hear us loud and clear!

Join us from 6pm-9pm as we celebrate love and family during the holidays — and as we remind Doug Manchester that our families want to be recognized too.

  • Seussical costumes encouraged (including Cat-in-the-Hat Hats)
  • Bring a hot beverage!
  • Instruments welcome! If you’re going to be bring an instrument, please contact Josh Napier at joshuanapier2009 [at sign] gmail [dot] com (he’s coordinating the music!)
  • Original lyrics to existing carols are also welcome! (please bring copies to share with everyone!)

Time: 6:00pm – 9:00pm
Location: Manchester Grand Hyatt
Street: 1 Marketplace
City: San Diego, CA
