Whitburn: Sanders to testify at Prop 8 trial

November 20th, 2009, by Mike Tidmus

Stephen Whitburn, writing at Gay & Lesbian News Now, notes that San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders will be a witness in the Olson-Boies trial on the constitutionality of Prop 8 when it begins in January 2010.

Sanders, a Republican, gained national prominence in the marriage equality debate two years ago when he changed his mind and announced that he would sign a City Council resolution directing the City Attorney to file a court brief in support of same sex marriage.

Sanders courageously changed his mind, in a very public way and at great risk to his political future as a Republican, when he confounded expectations and came out in favor of marriage equality. Grab a tissue and watch the Mayor make his now famous announcement. In the video, Mayor Sanders reveals that he has gay and lesbian family members, friends and staff and says, “In the end, I could not look any of them in the face and tell them that their relationships — their very lives — were any less meaningful than the marriage that I share with my wife, Rana.”

Regular readers might recall that Mayor Sanders recently participated in a performance of The Laramie Project: 10 Years Later at the La Jolla Playhouse back in October.
