It’s beautiful Saturday in the neighborhood … lots to do in San Diego … here are a few tips:

Patriot’s Pride March (Oceanside)

This is our first annual event and it is and will always be “In loving memory of Seaman August Provost.” Normally when LGBT veterans are allowed to march in a Veterans Day event as openly LGBT we are put in the back. “No More Back of the Parade for LGBT Vets”. This time we are in the front!!!

Since 1940 over 100,000 Service Members have been kicked out for being LGBT. We need to end the persecution and let people know that all people are EQUAL!

From 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm, In San Diego the location is 1300 N. Coast Hwy, Oceanside, CA 92054 — the location of the vigil for Seaman August Provost, who was murdered a short while back.

Veterans please wear a T Shirt in your service’s color and the name of your service on it. People wanting to volunteer please wear a yellow T Shirt and come 2 hours early – 10:00 am.

Check out the My Patriot’s Pride website.

San Diego Equality Awards

San Diego — Equality California (EQCA) will honor Attorney General Jerry Brown, Stuart Milk, and Diane Schroer at the 2009 Equality Awards ceremony in San Diego.

Attorney General Jerry Brown will receive the Equality Leadership Award for demonstrating a strong commitment to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender civil rights issues (LGBT). As Governor in the 1970s and early 80s, Brown actively opposed the Briggs Initiative, which sought to ban gay and lesbian teachers from public schools and helped get President Carter to publicly oppose it as well. He also appointed the first openly gay judge to the bench in California. Last year, after Proposition 8 passed, he took the unprecedented step of refusing to defend a voter-approved initiative in court and urged the California Supreme Court to overturn the marriage ban. In addition, he has asked the federal courts to overturn Prop. 8 in the case filed by Ted Olson and David Boies now pending in Federal District Court.

EQCA will also honor Diane Schroer, a transgender rights advocate and highly-decorated Army veteran who will receive the Equality Advocate Award. Schroer filed and won a gender discrimination lawsuit against the Library of Congress, setting a ground-breaking precedent for transgender individuals’ employment rights.

Stuart Milk, nephew of civil rights leader Harvey Milk, will receive the Equality Champion Award for carrying on the legacy of Harvey Milk through his community advocacy, particularly for LGBT youth.
The evening’s festivities include a reception and a silent auction. Event proceeds go to EQCA, the state’s advocacy organization for the LGBT community. For tickets, tables or sponsorship information, please contact Kaitlin Karkos, or visit us online at: www.eqca.org/sandiego

MEUSA-SD Canvass OUT-Reach for Equality!

Project OUT-Reach – is a campaign by Marriage Equality USA -San Diego where we are going into neighborhoods around San Diego County talking to voters, asking them how they feel about marriage equality, educating the community about what’s happening around the issue, and getting them involved in the next steps towards equality. Even by starting right now we still need to open 300,000 Californian hearts and minds by using earned media, demonstrations, public outreach and education.

To be successful we cannot just organize in areas that are supportive. We must also reach out to communities that have not traditionally been our allies in this fight to bridge the gap in understanding. We will have conversations with people, both at their doors and in busy public spaces to raise consciousness about the issue as well as funds for the cause. We will keep our community energized and engaged as activists, fighting to win back our fundamental right to marry.
