Commemorating the first anniversary of the passage of Proposition 8
(graphic: mine, based on a photograph from the Union-Tribune)
Today, 4 November 2009, marks the first anniversary of the passage of Proposition 8. One year ago today, the right of same-sex couples to enter into civil marriages in California was taken away by a slim, majority vote. This evening’s rally and march are doubly poignant due to the loss of marriage equality in Maine yesterday. Bring your sorrow and your rage, and resolve that inequality and intolerance will not be allowed to remain in California’s Constitution, nor in any state nor at any level of governance across this nation of ours.
Here, from the event’s press release, are the pertinent details:
Prop 8’s 1 Year Anniversary Marked by Light Up the Night! ; March to Manchester Grand Hyatt
Supporters of same-sex marriage rally at San Diego County Administration Building to march to the Manchester Grand Hyatt
SAN DIEGO, CA – Supporters of same-sex marriage and equality will rally at the San Diego County Administration Building to mark the Anniversary of Prop 8’s passing on Wednesday November 4th at 6:00PM. After a speaker’s program, protesters will march along W Harbor Dr. to the Manchester Grand Hyatt protest starting at 7:00PM, and then view an 8:00PM outdoor screening of Dustin Lance Black’s “MILK”.
The event, known as Light Up the Night! (LUTN!), will also be a chance for San Diego activists to respond to elections in Maine and Washington where Same-Sex Marriage and Domestic Partnerships, respectively, will have been voted on the day before.
Light Up the Night! (LUTN!) was conceived by 17-year-old straight ally and Scripps Ranch High School Senior Jase Watson. “I saw a need to mark this historic occasion and immediately started working on a plan back in September” said Jase Watson. “Light Up the Night! is an important event in the LGBT Civil Rights movement in San Diego which will show support for repealing Proposition 8 and restoring marriage equality.” Other anniversary events are being held in cities across the state including San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Organizations such as Equality California, Restore Equality 2010 (RE 2010), Sleep with the Right People, and San Diego Alliance for Marriage Equality (SAME) have endorsed LUTN!, with others looking to endorse as well.
