Brian Brown of NOM flustered by questions about his funding, at DC gay marriage hearing (video: MetroWeekly at YouTube)
Brian Brown, the Executive Director of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), addressed a hearing on marriage equality in Washington DC yesterday. Council Member David Catania demanded answers and got little other than evasive, pre-fab talking points from Brown. Like NOM’s Maggie Gallagher during her Hofstra University debate a few days ago, Brown seemed to have little new to offer, and, consequently, resorted to again claiming that he and his organization, which exists solely to eliminate the rights of other American citizens, are victims. Said Brown, “[T]hose of us who believe that there is something special and unique about husbands and wives are equivalent of bigots or are animated by hatred or irrational animus.”
And, those of us who believe there’s something equally “special and unique” about husbands and husbands and wives and wives are … what, Brian? Misguided? Perverts? Second-class citizens?
Go ahead, Brian, contradict the President of the United States who recently asserted: “You will see a time in which we as a nation finally recognize relationships between two men or two women as just as real and admirable as relationships between a man and a woman. You will see a nation that’s valuing and cherishing these families as we build a more perfect union — a union in which gay Americans are an important part.”
No, the President didn’t call for legalizing same-sex marriage, but he took a solid step toward justice and equality for all Americans, and, in so doing, he proved, as candidate Obama said during the election, that he is “open to the possibility” that his views on granting the name “marriage” to same-gender couples may be “misguided.”
