Did you know that every 9 1/2 minutes, someone in the US is infected with HIV? Did you know that as many as 220,000 Americans do not know they are living with HIV? (graphic: San Diego AIDS Walk 2009)

AIDS Walk San Diego is next Sunday, 27 September. More than two dozen of our local HIV/AIDS programs are going to feel the pinch of the Governator’s budget cuts, so they need your help more than ever. Can’t walk? Got no money? Step up and volunteer.

MEUSA-SD Canvass OUT-Reach for Equality!

Project OUT-Reach – is a campaign by Marriage Equality USA -San Diego where we are going into neighborhoods around San Diego County talking to voters, asking them how they feel about marriage equality, educating the community about what’s happening around the issue, and getting them involved in the next steps towards equality. Even by starting right now we still need to open 300,000 Californian hearts and minds by using earned media, demonstrations, public outreach and education.

To be successful we cannot just organize in areas that are supportive. We must also reach out to communities that have not traditionally been our allies in this fight to bridge the gap in understanding. We will have conversations with people, both at their doors and in busy public spaces to raise consciousness about the issue as well as funds for the cause. We will keep our community energized and engaged as activists, fighting to win back our fundamental right to marry.

Time: 10:00am – 3:00pm
Location: Lips Restaurant
Street: 3036 El Cajon Blvd

AIDS Walk San Diego 2009

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s cuts to California’s HIV/AIDS programs were nothing less than monstrous. Now, more than before, this is our community’s best shot at raising badly-needed funds for programs and services vital to San Diegans at risk for or living with AIDS/HIV-infection. Please, sign up and walk or run. If you can’t, dig deep and support a participant or team.

AIDS Walk San Diego is San Diego’s largest one-day HIV/AIDS fundraiser and the biggest non-governmental financial provider for HIV/AIDS in San Diego County. Dozens of agencies — serving thousands of clients — rely on funds raised at the annual AIDS Walk to help provide essential prevention and care programs to thousands of men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS.

Established as AIDS Walk San Diego in 1989, this event took place for two years prior as the Walk for Life. Through a unique funding partnership with the San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative, AIDS Walk San Diego is able to increase the impact of the dollars raised at the event. Funds from the Walk are combined with donations from other philanthropists and foundations to qualify for matching funds. Since 1989, AIDS Walk San Diego has raised more than $7.5 million. In partnership with the San Diego HIV Funding Collaborative, nearly $555,988 was distributed last year to 26 community-based HIV/AIDS service organizations in San Diego County.

Check out the AIDS Walk San Diego website or Facebook for more information.

Time: 7:00am – 10:00am (see the event schedule)

Exploring Generation Queer

What does it mean to be “queer”? Where did the term originate and why is it so controversial? Should we reclaim the word or reject it? These questions and more will be addressed in a dynamic new workshop, “Generation Queer,” taking place Wednesday, September 30, at 7pm at The San Diego LGBT Community Center (3909 Centre St., Hillcrest). Facilitated by Women’s Studies graduate student Christy Arrington, “Generation Queer” will take a deep look into what it means to identify as queer in the 21st century, as well as how the term can be applied to gender, activism and more.

This workshop is free and open community members of all genders. Discussion and group interaction will be encouraged. For more information on “Generation Queer,” please contact Abby Schwartz at (619) 692-2077, ext. 212, or email aschwartz [at sign] thecentersd [dot] org
