The San Diego City Council voted 7-0, this morning, to pass a resolution supporting the repeal of the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. Councilman Young was absent and missed the vote.
The leader of a small group opposing the resolution adamantly insisted the city council stick to local business and claimed the leadership of the the GLBT community had ties to the gay pornography industry and a fascination with military porn.
Speakers in favor of the resolution included a number of gay and lesbian former service members. Retired Army Colonel and West Point graduate Stewart Bornhoft noted that the discrimination, hypocrisy and duplicity inherent in the policy were moral issues that needed to be addressed.
Councilman Carl DeMaio, one of two openly gay council members, said he regarded protecting jobs in the region as appropriate business for the city council.
San Diego’s other openly gay councilman, Todd Gloria, according to the Union-Tribune, said “I see supporting the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ to be completely in synch with San Diego’s tradition of standing in support of our military and their families.”
Councilman Gloria, at his Facebook page, asked the community to thank the other members of the council for their support. Good idea. Find a list of contact information for the San Diego City Council, including email links, here.
