This morning, the California Supreme Court decided that the rights of any minority can be taken away by a majority vote. While the court upheld the heinous Proposition 8, the court also allowed the approximately 18,000 marriages that occurred in the brief window before last November’s election to remain intact.
This evening, a rowdy crowd of about 5000 or so San Diegans responded by noisily marching with signs, banners, bullhorns and whistles from Balboa Park to the Hall of Justice Downtown.
San Diego’s Mayor Jerry Sanders introduced his family, including his daughter Lisa and her fiancée Meaghan Yaple. Mayor Sanders told the crowd, “Sadly, the California Supreme Court today decided that some Californians have the right to take away certain rights from others. It’s obvious that neither justice nor equality were on the court’s agenda today.”
When Lisa Sanders spoke, she asked, “Can I get an applause? I walked the whole way in my high heels today!”
Tomorrow, 27 May, there will be a Day after Decision rally at Noon outside the County Administration Center — 1600 Pacific Coast Highway.
