Miss California’s Miss USA 2009 speech (video: YouTube)
Had you not heard, local beauty queen wannabe Carrie Prejean failed to win Miss USA last night. These antiquated T&A pageants are revolting and degrading, so needless to say, I wasn’t watching and could normally care less. However, Prejean’s bigoted response (in the video above) has the lavender end of the internets abuzz this morning. Miss Prejean is entitled to her opinion, but so are we.
Here’s the tale of the fail, told from two points of view at opposite ends of the queer spectrum.
From Buffy at Gatheist Agenda:
Carrie Prejean is a junior at San Diego Christian College. She is also “an advocate for encouraging healthy lifestyles for young women–which is probably code for “moral purity” or some other asinine crap.
If women want to enter pageants, be models, act, become centerfolds in nudie magaines, be prostitutes or whatever that’s their choice. But who is this little “Christian” college student, who struts around on stages in bikinis and sequined ensembles that barely cover her breasts and backside, to make any sort of “moral” judgment on anybody? She parades herself like a Vegas showgirl for the entire world to see–mind you these things are broadcast worldwide–then has the gall to claim somebody else’s “lifestyle” isn’t adequately moral in her opinion for them to have the rights she takes for granted.
Here’s the Perez Hilton take, via News.com.au:
Miss California, Carrie Prejean, was asked by contest judge and celebrity gossip blogger Perez Hilton for her views on gay marriage during the Miss USA pageant at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, samesame.com reports.
Hilton asked this question: “Vermont recently became the fourth state to legalise same-sex marriage. Do you think every state should follow suit? Why or why not?”
“Well I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one way or the other,” 21-year-old Prejean said.
“We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage,” she continued. ”You know what, in my country, in my family, I do believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman, no offence to anybody out there. But that’s how I was raised and I believe that it should be between a man and a woman. Thank you.”
Hilton, the self proclaimed “Queen of all media” who has campaigned for gay equal rights, called the answer “the worst answer in pageant history”.
On a video blog on his website Hilton said, “She lost not because she doesn’t believe in gay marriage, she lost because she’s a dumb bitch!”
UPDATE (20 April 2:56 pm): Via Joe. My. God., we learn that Carrie Prejean believes the homosexual Hilton cost her the title:
It did cost me my crown. I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I said what I feel. I stated an opinion that was true to myself and that’s all I can do. It is a very touchy subject and he [Hilton] is a homosexual and I see where he was coming from and I see the audience would’ve wanted me to be more politically correct. But I was raised in a way that you can never compromise your beliefs and your opinions for anything.
Elsewhere this, via The Christian Science Monitor, from Keith Lewis, Executive Director of Miss California USA/Teen USA:
As co-executive director of Miss CA USA and one of the leaders of the Miss CA family, I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss CA USA 2009 believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman. Although I believe all religions should be able to ordain what unions they see fit, I do not believe our government should be able to discriminate against anyone. Religious beliefs have no place in politics in the Miss CA family.

“Is it a feasible option anywhere within the borders of the United States to be legally married to someone of the same gender?”
If the answer is ‘yes,’ then we are in fact are a land where one may feasibly choose same-sex ‘marriage,’ regardless of how much quibbling you wish to raise. She did not state that one may have a same-sex marriage authorized in any courthouse in any state in the Union, merely that this is a land in which one can make that choice, testified to by the fact that numerous people already have. In other words, her on-the-spot verbal fumbling still ends up being more accurate than your attempts at correction.
As for the softball question, what would the utterly-unqualified Carrie Prejean have had to say about national healthcare — right of citizenship or not? The other contestants got far tougher questions.
Not from a judge known to be an extremely vocal activist (so much so that he publicly dish out barbaric insults to any dissenters) for the very issue he is posing a pointed question on. Or aren’t you ‘qualified’ enough a commentator to recognize so simple a factor as context?
Without a thought, Miss California blew off just under half the state of California — the 48% who believe all Californians should be entitled to civil marriage.
If you define politely expressing a difference of opinion (“…I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.”) when asked about it directly as ‘blowing off’ other people and ‘lack of diplomacy,’ then you’ve plainly demonstrated that you lack anything even resembling objectivity.
And WTF is “opposite marriage?”
I didn’t address the topic. Your gratuitous use of a red herring fallacy is only further proof that you fail to grasp even the fundamentals of logic.

Gay marriage = religious freedom
The truth can be pretty powerful.
Carrie Prejean, you are a beautiful woman–inside and out. Watching you, I pray that my children have as much confidence and self-respect as you do. It’s not just that you have a strong relationship with God, but you aren’t afraid of all these gay people that seem to think that they should be able to alter not only God’s word, but also our constitutional rights. Who do they think they are? Thank God for people like you who aren’t going to let them run you over. Hopefully the rest of America can learn something from you.
by the way, are there REALLY people that think “because you are a Christian, you are automatically perfect and NOT subject to sin?? Wow, that would be great, wouldn’t it. Well, not in this lifetime.
OH, one last thought…why don’t we let people marry and have sex with their dogs next…why not?? Oh, jeez, is this already going on and do the gay people have it on the ballet for the next election :)
I think she did a wonderful job. She answered and explained her answer.
Today’s society is just so used to getting a prepackaged, rehearsed, sugar-coated and plastic-wrapped product sold to us. We suck it all up like the sheep we’ve become.
Really, she just said something that isn’t ‘politically correct’. And while Imy opinion is not the same as hers, I absolutely respect her for her convictions, and respect her right to have an opinion at all. See that? That’s called TOLERANCE. Look it up, Libs. You’ve been yelling for it so long, but its kind of like you’ve totally wiped it from your systems.
I also think that Perez (who is significant because why?????) only makes the gay community look bad. Aside from being completely classless, where is his ‘tolerance’ and ‘acceptance’ of another’s view? She totally didn’t attack him or his lifestyle, she just honestly admitted that she disagreed. Liberals are doing this waaaaaay too much (the hypocracy) and people are catching on. It is childish and getting old.
She’s just being attacked because her viewpoint is conservative.
Perez is way out of bounds on insulting Carrie for her true beliefs. That was one of the most stupiest questions to ask from a pagean judge. Perez shouldn’t have even been a judge sense he doesn’t like women be a gay. He should only be allowed to judge dog shows What a loser. It is great to see someone like Carrie standup to all of this liberal crap.
God save this country from these idiots.
Perez Hilton is acting like gays and lesbians were persecuted over Carrie Prejean’s answer to the question about gay and lesbian marriage. It is a very sad day that it has come to where a person must be punished for stating what they think. I keep hearing “tollerance!!!” being shouted out at every junction from gay and lesbian advocates, yet their is no tollerance for anyone who gives an answer honestly because they believe what they say is the truth. What is this country coming to when one group of people think they are more priviledged than any other group in society. You take away the rights of the people to express what they think in favor of another view and make that the law of the land to silence others, then that becomes a socialist society, controlled by a certain segment. When we lose the right to express our opinions and beliefs, then we are no longer free.
>>>What is this country coming to when one group of people think they are more priviledged than any other group in society
You must mean Christian conservatives.
>>>You take away the rights of the people to express what they think in favor of another view
Nobody has suggested taking away her right to say anything. As I’ve stated twice above: “Miss Prejean is entitled to her opinion, but so are we.”
>>>OH, one last thought…why don’t we let people marry and have sex with their dogs next…why not??
You call that a “thought?” What is with this peculiar Christianist obsession with fucking and marrying animals?
People that make statements like this ((I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss CA USA 2009 believes marriage rights belong only to a man and a woman)) needs to study the Bible , They don’t know what they are talking about. It saddens me that in the after life they may be in the wrong place.
Would they not be equally served by studying Homer or Bullfinch or some other mythology?
What makes your choice of mythologies any more valid than, say, Islam or any other so-called faith?
Mike,
Most any faith in God is better than no FAITH . I think that you just said it all “mythologies” I sure know where you stand. NO faith in God at all.
>>>You take away the rights of the people to express what they think in favor of another view<<<
As you say it in your “mythologies” in the Christian faith, God don’t care what your views are you are, you are just to follow his commandments.
And it is a waste of time to talk to a unbeliever.
For the third time, I specifically said: Miss Prejean is entitled to her opinion, but so are we.
How is that taking away her right to express herself? Am I taking away your right to express yourself?
Bottom line: I just happen to believe in one less God than you.
Are you saying that I don’t have a right to express that view?
Mike Tidmus, If you are posting this,
We know where you stand, go do your thing.
Like I’v said “God don’t care what your views are . And to God there IS no such thing as liberal or conservative. Sorry that is just the way it is.
A Christian Conservatives
ONE more time, like I’v said ” GOD don’t care what you beleive or think or your rights.”
((Bottom line: I just happen to believe in one less God than you)) You are wrong about this big time There is only one GOD and that is GOD. And if you feleive in one less GOD than me than you beleive in NO god.
((Are you saying that I don’t have a right to express that view)) If you beleive in one GOD you don’t know him very well.
And how could you beleive in GOD and call him a mythology????? See you don’t beleive in GOD, or know him at all.
I don’t believe in God, but you’re welcome to believe anything you like.
If you’re interested, ArtinNC, Carrie Prejean is streaming live on the web right now:

((I don’t believe in God, but you’re welcome to believe anything you like)) and you are welcome to beleive what ever you want . I feal sorry for you there is only GOD or the DEVIL, and hope I’m with GOD and will pray for you.
ArtinNC out.
“I am appalled at the people that say that they are Christians. You would not see Jesus judging men or women based on there lifestyle. Jesus accepted all into his arms, if you remember that Jesus died on the cross for all mankind. So you self righteous, self centered Christians that you call yourself take a look at yourself and see how you can help others and not judge them.”
In actuality, you are being self-righteous by appealing to Jesus and His death on the cross for alll mankind but turn around and ignore or reject His actual words and teachings that He left for all who believe in Him.
His own teachings in the synoptic gospels (first three out of four gospels) do in fact state marriage is between man and woman. No different there from what Carrie said. Except that Jesus took it a step further and said that was God’s intent all along from creation for marriage, being that a man shall leave his father and mother and be united with his wife, so the two can become one flesh. You would be offended there by what Christ actually said.
Jesus accepted all who came to Him. Coming to Him do require repentance from sins. That is the part you left out. Repentance, according to Christ and His apostles, are indeed required for one’s sins to be forgiven. Christ’s cross did indeed provided forgiveness of sins, but one must receive it- by faith and repentance.
When people do not repent, He did warn of God’s judgment of both individuals and whole cities. The most that the Bible taught about helll actually came from the words of Jesus in the gospels (besides Revelation). He warned people about hell. He did say repent or you too shall perish. Jesus not only warned people about murder and adultery, but thoughts that lead to them, in the context of teaching about hell (which shows how we cannot earn salvation of our own efforts).
Jesus in the gospel of John did state His warnings many times that those who do not believe in Him shall be judged and condemned.
Christ did in fact judge. He never told us not to judge, but told us not to judge hypocritically. Judge not lest you be judge is in context of look at speck in one’s own eye before removing the same from another’s eye.
I believe that Ms. Prejean is right. I am Christian myself. I have nothing against gay marriage and actually have friends that are gay. But, I believe in God and that a marriage should definitely be between a man and a woman. There is a lot of women that would lie just to take the crown and have the judges hear what they want to hear. But few who would actually be true to themselves even if it is worth the crown. If I was in her position and on stage right now, I would have said the same thing with no offense also. Even if it is worth the crown. Because I know in heaven, I’ll always have a crown.
I guess you had to delete my comment because of your foolish “house rules” pretaining to “citing Biblical chapter and verse”. Why don’t you just “man up” if you will & see what the bible really has to say about gay marriage & homosexuals? I’ll spell it out for you in layman’s terms……it’s F-O-R-B-I-D-D-E-N!
As an atheist, I could give a F-U-C-K what the bible says.
Fans of Carrie Prejean, try to keep up.
GOOD BOY, Mike you and the Devil are alive and will . And my praying hasn’t done any good but I’ll still keep trying.
