The National Organization for Marriage’s Maggie Gallagher and Brian Brown — the comedy team behind what is undoubtedly the most ridiculed, mocked and parodied television commercial in media history — are taking a bow and thanking all the little people for their epic failure enormous success.
In an email yesterday, NOM’s Brian Brown, wrote:
Speaking of the media campaign, it has been an enormous success: Millions of people have viewed our “Gathering Storm” ad, which you can see here. In fact, we broke into the top 100 videos on YouTube in the entire country. Thank you. (Stephen Colbert even made fun of our ad last night. The “Colbert Report”–now we’ve really made it into the big time! Thanks, HRC!)
Jeremy Hooper notes that NOM’s YouTube video has an enormously successful rating of one-star out of a possible five stars. And the comments are nearly as hilarious as the ad itself.
Gallagher and Brown disingenuously lavish their appreciation on Stephen Colbert‘s brilliant parody saying:
(Princeton, NJ) – “I’ve always thought Stephen Colbert was a double-agent, pretending to pretend to be a conservative, to pull one over Hollywood. Now I’m sure,” said Maggie Gallagher, President of the National Organization for Marriage.
“Thank you Stephen for playing our ad in full on national television—for free. HRC eat your heart out. Plus we all had a great chuckle, too!” said Brian Brown, NOM’s Executive Director. “Where can I make a donation to the National Organization for Colbert?”
Maggie and Brian seem to want to give the impression that they’re in on the joke, but neither seems to realize that, in reality, they’re the butt of the joke.
Still, the comedy duo continues to insist they’re merely “telling the truth about what gay marriage is going to mean,” while, of course, never ever telling lies. However, yesterday’s email from Brian Brown also claims:
This first ad in our $1.5 million media campaign helped us kick off our much larger goal: recruiting two million for marriage . (A side note: No, we don’t call it “2m4m,” that’s what MSNBC’s gay-marriage advocate and sometime journalist Rachel Maddow called it–amazing how much stuff they just make up while calling our side “liars,” isn’t it? Silly stuff.) The response has been so tremendous so far, I’m thinking of renaming it: ten million for marriage!
(emphasis: mine)
Amazing indeed how much stuff gets made up, because an email blast from NOM’s Brian Brown on 8 April quite specifically says:
Dear Mike,
In just a few minutes, NOM President Maggie Gallagher and I will hold a press conference in Trenton, NJ, announcing an ambitious new nationwide “2 Million for Marriage” (2M4M) initiative.
(emphasis: mine)
Not liars? What does that leave? Mr Thesaurus suggests: false-witness-bearers, deceivers, frauds, swindlers, con artists, cheats, fraudsters, fibbers, storytellers, deceivers, dissemblers, fabricators, prevaricators, perjurers, falsifiers …
Has anybody checked to see if the domain 10M4M.org is taken?
