The coming storm of anti-gays for pay

The National Organization for Marriage ordered the removal of this audition video (graphic: mine)

You’re undoubtedly going to hear a lot about an ad released this morning by the National Organization for Marriage. Start by checking out this bit of video, in which the paid actors do their little dog-and-pony about how they’ve been harmed by the civil marriages of same-gender couples. NOM has named their ad Gathering Storm. Well, it is. It is a gathering storm of lies and half-truths much like the Prop H8 campaign we, here in California, witnessed last year.

The NOM ad smacks of the paranoid McCathyism of the 1950′s, only, in this case, instead of a commie under every bed in America, there are two gays on top of the bed and they’re wearing matching gold wedding bands.

Where are NOM’s ads about the gathering storm of runaway divorce rates? The gathering storm of out-of-wedlock births? They don’t and won’t exist, because the National Organization for Marriage is a one-trick pony, and they’re in the business of spreading fear and lies about marriage equality. Here’s the bad news delivered in an email blast this morning from NOM’s Executive Director Brian Brown:

Over the next two years, we will be organizing two million marriage activists from every state in the nation to form an online army of marriage activists willing to stand up for marriage on a moment’s notice, sending emails and making phone calls to legislators whenever marriage is threatened.

Well, we, the good guys, are doing a little organizing of our own. More about that later.

I’ve decided not to link to the NOM video at YouTube, but here are some takes on this bit of, as Robert Cruickshank writing at the Courage Campaign blog aptly puts it, conservative victimology:

  • Courage Campaign: The coming storm
  • Good As You: Video: We enlist in the Quiet-NOM War. This is my buddy Jeremy Hooper’s brilliant YouTube response to the NOM lies
  • Good As YouSeeking: A ‘rainbow coalition’ willing to lie for money
  • Pam’s House BlendNational Organization for Marriage’s new tactic: fear-mongering without using the word ‘religion’
  • Right Wing Watch: It’s like rain on your wedding day
  • Right Wing Watch: I’m not a doctor, but I play one in the NOM ad
  • Right Wing Watch: The “only one vote” talking point
  • Towleroad: Pro-family fear-mongering zombies release gay marriage scare ad
