ProtectMarriage gets all sneaky

January 8th, 2009, by Mike Tidmus

Blogger Justin McLachlan reports that Protect Marriage and its right-wing legal goon squad, the Alliance Defense Fund, are suing to hide the list of donors to Prop H8, which eliminated marriage equality in California. They’re asking a federal court to overrule California’s campaign disclosure law. The whole Prop H8 campaign was funded and run by out-of-state carpetbaggers, so it’s no surprise they have little, if any, regard for California law.

From Justin McLachen:

The ballot measure committee Protectmarriage.com and the National Organization for Marriage California have asked a federal court to force California to remove campaign donor records from public view (expunge them completely, actually).

They want the court to declare that the state’s campaign disclosure law — insomuch as it makes them file reports after the election is over and allows/requires those reports be publicly available after the election — violates the First Amendment.

They’ve also asked the court to prevent the state from requiring them to file upcoming reports, due on Jan. 31, that they say will reveal the names of previously undisclosed campaign donors and they want protection from filing reports that reveal the names of their treasurer and campaign officers, like registration documents.

The groups said in their complaint that “there is a reasonable probability that the Act’s compelled disclosure requirements will result in threats, harassment, and reprisals, similar to those already suffered by supporters of Proposition 8.”

[ ... ]

BTW, Protectmarriage.com is the same group that used public campaign disclosure records to threaten a San Diego business that donated to the “No on prop. 8″ before the campaign. The registration documents they want to make secret are the same ones that I used to show the campaign was being organized through a mutual benefit corporation — California Renewal — that the state had suspended for failing to pay taxes.

Justin, who has a copy of the filing at his blog, calls these shadowy political moves dangerous. I call them the same old lies and deceit that we’ve come to expect from the radical religious reich. These homo-sex-obsessed Christianists never fail to disappoint.
