As I type this, thousands of hungry Christianists have left their double-wides in Methcondido and their little houses made of ticky-tacky in Cucamonga, piled into their holy-rollin’ Battlewagons-for-the-Lord, and are currently tooling down I-5 set to descend on Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego to prey away marriage equality and enshrine their Bronze Age world view in the California Constitution.
In what promises to be a Leni Riefenstahl, picture-perfect moment, the assembled flocks of Yes-on-Eighters will forego food, and some might say common sense, to spend a day beneath the blazing sun, rapturously chanting, preying and listening to the bleatings of their self-anointed leadership — most of whom have undoubtedly taken up temporary residence in one of Doug Manchester’s posh hotels.
But the good citizens of America’s Finest City have not simply locked up their small animals and pulled the blinds. Indeed many of us San Diego citizens will be out in the street tonight raising a candle and a No on Prop 8 sign, and demanding fairness and equality for all Californians — without regard to race, creed or sexual orientation.
“Making the Right Call: Standing on the Side of Love” will kick-off this morning in The Great Hall of St Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral with an interfaith service. People of all faiths are invited to head over to St Paul’s at 2728 Sixth Avenue (at Olive). For like-minded people, unable to attend, there are No on Prop 8 faith events, coordinated by a coalition of California clergy members and worshipers, scheduled up and down the state. Here’s a listing of those events.
This evening, just as the hate fest at Qualcomm approaches climax, thousands of citizens from across California will take to the streets of San Diego in a candlelight rally against Proposition 8. San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders and his daughter will be among those handing out candles at The San Diego LGBT Community Center (3909 Centre Street just north of University Avenue, Google Map).
So gather your family, friends and neighbors together and raise a candle and your voice for freedom, fairness, equality and the defeat of Proposition 8.
UPDATE (11-01, 12:48 pm Pacific) Here are a few photos from the press conference following the interfaith service at St Paul’s in San Diego. Minutes after I arrived, I was pinned with a No on Prop 8 button and hugged. As I was leaving, a large contingent of people with signs and No on 8 literature was heading out toward Balboa Park to spread the word. A number of vans plastered with hand-made No on 8 signs and full of people were also hitting the road for San Diego’s largest shopping mall.

The Call is supposed to air live on GodTV.
No joke – there is a GodTV: www, god.tv; DirecTV 365.
Thanks Nelson!
I don’t watch much TV, because there’s no C-chip available to keep the Chistianist malarkey off my set.
For those with real intestinal fortitude, TheCrawl is being broadcast on the internets from start to finish.
I just walked by St Paul’s, and they’re already gearing up for their day-long event. They’re out hanging their gay-welcoming purple banners and posting No on 8 yard signs all around the property.
It doesn’t appear they filled up the stadium as they had hoped. Some people already look bored.
There were a handful of haters in Balboa Park at Laurel and 6th, earlier this morning. I’m guessing they were waiting for a bus to Qualcomm and not interested in the Walk for Autism that was passing by.
Lots of TV trucks and press at St Paul’s in the couryard, and the place is really rocking. Parking is now at a premium, but anyone still wishing to head over to St Pauls can catch a Number 3 bus up Fifth or down Fourth. Both stop at Nutmeg, which is the southern boundary of the cathedral.
Another update -
Nothing signficant has taken place.
It’s been somewhat repetitive, with a band playing something over and over again, a bunch of preachers and or pastors, some known, some not so well known, praying to Joshua… Joshua?
As I’m writing this, there’s an asian woman is having an emotional breakdown, complaining about her youth pastor husband doing cyber.
Just in case, the show actually got started during the second six hours, with all the major players showing up to speak about Prop 8.
I think they even did a “if pass prop 8,lou will die” thing.
