I thought I’d heard every morally-bankrupt, right-wing, christianist, tin-hat, lunatic pronouncement about AIDS that was possible for a reactionary sub-human, piece of garbage to utter. Silly me!
From the 8 October 2008 broadcast of Minneapolis’ KTLK’s The Chris Baker Show :
CALLER: What you run into is — you run into this idea, the same way that in education we want to make all the dumb people smart even though it’s impossible — their IQ limits them — and we’re going to spend all this money to try to do something that’s impossible. And you — it’s a waste of time, and you get frustrated employees, frustrated workers with all these demands to do something they can’t possibly do.
BAKER: There you go. All right, thanks.
PERRY: What about diseases that are eminently treatable and you can live with for a long, long time quite healthily if you just get some basic drugs?
BAKER: Like Magic Johnson.
PERRY: Like Magic with his faked AIDS. Magic faked AIDS.
BAKER: You think Magic faked AIDS for sympathy?
PERRY: I’m convinced that Magic faked AIDS.
BAKER: Yeah, me too.
PERRY: It falls apart –
BAKER: Which is horrible.
PERRY: — when you get into motivation. I’m not sure why, but I’m pretty sure he faked AIDS.
BAKER: I’ve got a great email here from –
PERRY: ‘Cause he’s the only cured AIDS guy ever.
A major tip of the beret to the fine folks at Media Matters for picking this up. They have the audio at the link.
When professional basketball star Earvin Magic Johnson announced in 1991 that he had tested HIV positive, the whole damn world was stunned. It sat up and paid attention. His candid announcement opened doors that were not previously imagined openable for AIDS education in communities considered barely reachable. When Magic established the Magic Johnson Foundation, which subsequently diversified to include other charitable goals, he stated that his aim was to educate people about HIV infection and to teach others not to discriminate against people living with HIV and AIDS.
To claim, without substantiation as Chris Baker and Langdon Perry have, that anyone would fake an HIV/AIDS diagnosis is a despicable new low and so far beyond the pale that a rational mind cannot comprehend this level of ignorance.Â
Living with a regime of horrifyingly toxic anti-HIV drugs may produce a laboratory test result that indicates little or no virus activity, but it is anything but a “cure.”
One is left to wonder when the world will have a cure for arrogant, AIDS-phobic stoopidity.
